Improving Balance and Functional Mobility Using Dynamic Balance Training and Exercise

Patient Information: Male, Age 62

Diagnosis: Muscle Weakness / Falls / Dementia

History: This gentleman, a long-term skilled nursing facility resident, experienced several falls from his wheelchair and was referred to therapy by nursing to maximize his overall functional mobility in an effort to reduce his fall risk.

Pre-Therapy Status:
•Transfers: Dependent (100% assistance) for sit to stand.
•Balance: Dependent (100% assistance) in standing.
•Lower Body Dressing: Maximal (>75%) assistance.

Therapy Information:
•Modality: OmniStand® Dynamic Balance System.
•Frequency: 3-4x per week.
•Protocol Specifics: OmniStand® in static mode to optimize balance during standing activities, including dressing.
•Duration: Six weeks.
•Other Therapy Services Provided: Therapeutic activities, therapeutic exercise, gait training, and neuro re-education.

Outcome:
• Transfers: Minimal (25%) assistance for sit to stand.
• Balance: Minimal (25%) assistance in standing.
• Lower Body Dressing: Minimal (25%) assistance.

This gentleman’s therapists feel that his activities on the OmniStand® contributed to his progress with transfers and standing balance which improved his safety and decreased his dependence on staff. He is now able to help the nursing staff with his lower body dressing which was difficult prior to therapy.
