Improving Functional Mobility Using Exercise

Patient Information: Female, Age 85

Diagnosis: Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) / Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) / Muscle Weakness

History: This woman was referred to a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation services after hospitalization due to chronic heart failure. Prior to the hospitalization, she lived at home with family and was independent with activities of daily living (self-care activities) and walking.

Pre-Therapy Status:
•Transfers: Maximal (>75%) assistance of 2 people.
•Self-Care: Maximal (>75%) assistance for dressing, bathing, and toileting.
•Ambulation: Unable to walk.

Therapy Information:
•Modality: OmniCycle® Elite Motorized Therapeutic Exercise System.
•Frequency: 5x per week.
•Protocol Specifics: OmniCycle upper and lower extremity neuro mode to improve arm and leg strength and endurance.
•Duration: Nine weeks.
•Other Therapy Services Provided: Activities of daily living, therapeutic exercise, therapeutic activity, and gait training.

Outcome:
•Transfers: Independent with a rollator walker.
•Self-Care: Independent using a rollator walker for dressing, bathing, and toileting.
•Ambulation: 300 feet with rollator walker.

This woman and her family are thrilled about her accomplishments in therapy! She has returned home with family and is again able to play with her grandchildren.
